It's Raining

I received a message this morning from someone who is currently on holiday with her family at the coast. "Its raining, the wind is blowing and the kids are impossible!"
Do we as parents in this Pinterest rich world of ours really no longer know how to entertain our own children? Its raining.... the Apocalypse is not upon you! I get that you're not in your own home and the usual entertainment is perhaps not available but hell, you are not in your own home, play Hide and Seek (if the place is small then play Hide and Seek the Object).
Find a couple of pieces of paper and some pens and play Name, Animal and Place, or have an Indoor Picnic complete with blanket and basket. Do a Tag on Story and see how your kids stretch their imagination with every turn. TALK to each other.
We have an all hands on deck mindset, where ever possible we do things together and many a Saturday will be spent doing strange and family orientated activities. this does not make us a Brady Bunch type family by no means, we are completely capable of doing things at an individual level, it merely means that we also enjoy doing things together other than watching TV.
We spent a Saturday a couple of weeks ago playing Photo Bingo, what fun it was to run around the house and yard looking for the perfect shot and then sitting together hooking the pictures up via the TV and each declaring our picture the best of the set and arguing why our photo should win the set. Here is my view and why this was such an awesome at home activity...
We spent time together!
We got active and ran around
We stretched our imaginations to find our personal representation of for example a word as simple as "Soft"
We taught our son that he cant always win (allowing your kids to lose will be a post all on its own)
We showed him how to lose gracefully, and rooting for others
We allowed him to feel the glow of truly winning when he deserved it (come on people you do realize 10 year old kids can tel when you let them win?)
We cultivate a passion for photography (this tends to be child specific, it just happens that our son loves taking photos)
I can probably go on and on and on about the pro's of Photo Bingo (and games like it) but here is the core of it... WE spent quality time TOGETHER.
Time spent with my family never feels forced , always ends in laughter and over flows with love. But maybe that is Just My Point of View...
