The girlfriend

About three months ago I went to pick up my son from school, he got in the car all giggles and red faced. When I asked him whats up he said "She likes me..." grinning from ear to ear! I looked at him in astonished silence 90% sure that a month ago girls were still GROSS! What changed, why did it change???

So this is the story, a girl in his class who also happens to love Minecraft with the same level of distractedness* mentioned to him that she likes him. I asked him what he responded and had to stifle a laugh as he declared "Nothing, I said nothing, just pulled my jersey over my head" I can see it clear as day, the little bugger turning beet red and retreating into his jersey like a turtle into his shell!

After some prompting he admitted that he might like her back, I asked why he liked her... is it because she is pretty? Glowing at his outraged response "What does Pretty matter?!" (We must be doing something right) He likes her because she if funny, helpful, plays Minecraft and the cherry on my geeky cake, she reads Terry Pratchett! I like this kid already.

We had lengthy conversations in the two weeks that all followed along the lines of "If you like her you need to tell her that", "It took a lot of guts for her to fess up about her feelings" and "the least you can do is respond".

Every morning as I dropped him off he confidently proclaimed that today was the day he would tell her. Picking up his down trodden face looking at ground "I couldn't muster up the courage". At some point in all this ten year old drama I told him he will need get it together, he cant leave a lady hanging like that... then it dawned on me. This was his first real boy-girl situation, how he handles this will form the base of all his relationships in the future.

This calls for fatherly intervention! Nudge Nudge Wink Wink

With some guidance he was able to get the message across... by telling a friend to tell her friend that he likes her too. The girl decided to face things head on, walked up to him and asked if it was true? Faced with the object of his affection he found a beam of courage and proclaimed "YES!". Ice Broken.

They are now "dating" which suits me just fine as ten year old dating revolves around writing notes like "you're awesome" to each other... lugging a daily purple lollipop to school (her favorite color) and swapping pencil-cases.

"Do you hold hands?" - NO

"Do you eat lunch together?" - NO

"Do you talk at all?" - Yes... only when we are allowed to in class

"Do you smooch?" - EWWWWWW NO!

Sounds like true love to me!... Just My Point of View...

*How you can spend 4 hours straight either playing Minecraft of watching YouTube videos of other people playing Minecraft is beyond me!
